Since the Mayan hammock is available in so many sizes, from the standard or single up through the Jumbo or XXL, the question as to what size a person needs often arises. The answer will depend on two primary factors, the size of the person and the intended use of the hammock. If the hammock is to be used as what the US Navy would term a sleeping device personal, larger sizes are recommended than what might be required for the quick lay down on a hot afternoon. The reasons and recommendations are the subject of this article.

The unique sprang woven style devised by the ancient Mayans allows the hammock to expand and contract according to user demand. So even one of the smaller sizes can fit a good sized adult. As the weave expands however, it becomes less supportive. As the diamond shape interstices are stretched there is more air there and less string. This makes them feel a little mushier and produces more string bite into the flesh. Additionally, Mayan hammocks are strung with the side rails a little shorter than the center so it forms a bucket shape. This helps keep you in, but in a hammock that is too small for you it may cause a little curvature in the neck while you sleep. The larger sizes can accommodate the user with more support and more evenness.

On the subject of support there is wide latitude for personal preference. If you are a person who likes a soft pillow top mattress, when you switch to a hammock for your eight hours in the land of nod you might like your weave a little looser. The trick there is to utilize a little less of the hammock and have it stretch out a bit more underneath you. If you are looking for more support for your back you will probably want more string under you. For sleep system purposes it just makes sense to have a hammock that is plenty big enough for you to be able to conform it to your wishes.

So how big is plenty big? If you are five feet to five and a half feet tall, a double or a queen size will be big enough. From five and a half to six feet a King Size is preferable. For six to seven footers the King or the Jumbo or the extra Jumbo will do the trick. Get the largest hammock you can reasonably afford in your size category to get the full potential working for you.
